"The pitch-perfect rugby shirt"

British Vogue

The sold out British Jersey is back. A true British cotton rugby jersey, designed to feel instantly familiar. Knitted and sewn in the British Isles from substantial yet breathable cotton jersey. We’ve taken the spirit of that 1993 jersey of our Founder's father - rolled up and ready - and rebuilt it. Shaped with more flattering ease through the chest and arm with a woven collar. Designed for everyday, but with something more stitched into every line. Despatch w/c 27th April.

The British Jersey / The Rugby is a familiar rugby silhouette, refined for a modern fit. Cut for movement, not restriction.

Extra ease through the chest and arm creates a more natural shape. It falls cleanly to the hips, with a structured contrast collar that holds its line.

The spirit of an old jersey - made to feel right for now. Soft yet substantial. Comfortable without losing structure. Knitted in 100% cotton loopback: breathable, weighty, with a natural ease.

100% COTTON
Crafted from a 100% cotton loopback fabric knitted into a 14 gauge - with a signature rugby collar made from a woven cotton drill.

CODELITE BUTTONS
Finished with three British made codelite buttons.

HAND-FINISHED
Each section of the Rugby shirt is cut, sewn together, and hand-finished by Roy and Helen.

MADE IN THE BRITISH ISLES
Knitted, finished and sewn together all within an 8-mile radius around Loughborough

  • Wash cold, (cotton doesn’t like hot water) on a gentle setting with the garment turned inside out and with similar colours. When a cotton garment is first washed, it is possible that a little shrinkage will occur. This is due to the natural characteristics of the cotton fibre and it will stable after the first cold gentle wash.
  • We advise avoiding using fabric conditioner because it can clog the fabrication, permeating the fibres - which causes the material to lose its natural softness.
  • Make sure to remove your garment from the washing machine promptly and reshape gently when wet.
  • After reshaping while damp, dry flat and provide a warm iron after washing so that its structure and shape remains at its best.

Each British Jersey item comes in a recycled paper bag and is shipped in boxes made from post-consumer waste in the UK.

The makers behind the British Jersey

At the heart of British Jersey is a quiet partnership: Roy, a knit-machine specialist, and Helen, a garment maker.

Based in Loughborough - for over 40 years, they’ve been keeping alive the craft of real rugby jerseys - structured but slouchy, breathable yet strong.

Originally known for supplying jerseys to British schools, Roy and Helen stayed committed to small-batch British production, even as others moved overseas.

Every part of the design is chosen to feel like a proper jersey should - weighty loopback cotton, knitted by Roy’s friend just down the road, cut and sewn by hand in their workshop. The process is slow, deliberate, and quietly exceptional.

A jersey made properly - for now, and for the years ahead.
