Behind the Scenes: Navygrey Spring/Summer 2020

Our small, spring summer collection of lighter weight knits and cardigans had not been completed when lockdown came to the UK and we had not yet had a chance to photograph the collection.

We managed to capture a few shots in the studio of the new styles in lockdown so that we could show them to you. I posted our samples to a photographer and together with his wife, we were able to get a few images so that we could bring them to life.

However, at Navygrey, we're influenced so much by the environment. A sense of place and context - and we really wanted to see our jumpers on location at one of our favourite places in Dorset - Kimmeridge Bay.

Kimmeridge Bay boasts the best rockpooling and safest snorkelling site in Dorset - although we must confess we didn't quite have time for that this time. The bay lies within a marine Special Area of Conservation and located on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. The shallow warm waters and sea breezes makes it a very special place.

Finally, as lockdown began to ease, we were able to assemble a tiny team. One model based nearby, a photographer and an art director (with some help from her boyfriend.) No hair or make up artist. No lighting. No one else. Everyone brought their own homemade sandwiches. Everything done at a distance.

The result is a very natural shoot, and just like the designs of our lighter-weight WEEKEND style and CARDIGAN, very much inspired by the simplicity of family holidays and our love of lazy days on the British coast.

We could never have known that this year would be summer of the staycation.
